A mercenary unit based in Angie’s Sigil and operating in most planets with spelljamming access. The organization consists of many mostly independent members, all of whom have proven their skill and trustworthiness to the Blue Shield order and now have their permission to operate under the Blue Shield name. Members of the Blue Shield carry an emblem with them, and this emblem proves to potential clients that the holder is approved of by the largest and most reliable mercenary group on the Prime. Individual members may band together under a mercenary of greater rank for large contracts but usually operate independently from the rest of their order.
Mercenaries wishing to join the Blue Shield must first sumbit no fewer than three letters from former employers vouching for their competence and integrity. They must then serve a term of at least one year in a Blue Shield unit. Such units usually consist of 5-20 members, only a few of whom are initiates. If they are judged worthy, then they are given a Blue Shield embelm and permission to continue their mercenary work as before.
A mercenary may advance in rank within the Blue Shield, giving him even greater credibility and the opportunity to command a small force of his own. Officers may command up to three Blue Shield mercenaries, Captains may command up to five, Commanders up to 15, and Generals up to 25. Generals are also sometimes called upon to lead larger groups as part of action undertaken at the behest of the organization itself, though such opportunities are rare.
The Blue Shield offices on Angie’s Sigil contain between 50 and 100 former mercenaries that either work as administration or handle the unit’s immediate concerns. These soldiers are chosen from among all of the mercenaries in the organizaiton, and as such are among the most respected fighters, operatives and strategists on the Prime.
Though it rarely undertakes large-scale military action, the Blue Shield has been known, for the right price, to topple governments, lay planets to waste or conquor small regions of space. During such times, all units are recalled and marshalled into an impromptu army of formidible experience. Though it has been some time since any such action took place, many speculate that the vast armada necessary to facilitate that kind of troop movement must still be maintained somewhere. If such an armada still exists in secret, then it would be safe to assume that the Blue Shield has a much larger base of operations located on an isolated planet somewhere. The Blue Shield itself does not publicly acknowledge the existence of any such armada.
