An island in political flux and the setting for Ian’s first campaign. Aoteroa is a recently discovered island containing multiple ruined cities and a humanoid population consisting only of lizardmen and a few strangely civilized orcs. The human nation of Brixton, the planet’s elven contingent, dwarves from the mainland and the island’s settlement of gnomes all struggle for political domination over the island. The reality of the situation is that of a political stalemate, though the recent addition of orcish interests to the political landscape may cause some uncomfortable changes.
For the time being, each race is represented by a councilman in the Aoteroan Interim Council. This council rules the island with the tacit approval of the Arbiters, the island’s magical automaton guardians. The Arbiters have also instituted the Clan System — a form of deputization of adventurers on the island — to police the island for them.
Aoteroa’s ruins are many and varied, seeming to originate from no fewer than three different civilizations. As a result of the presence of these civilizations, many magical items and other treasures are often located in the ruins, giving both governments and adventurers cause to lay claim to as much of the island as they can.
Aoteroa is also home to the recently discovered white steel and red silver, metals with magical properties that are especially prized by gnomes and dwarves for everything from weapons to cookware.
Also interested in the magical properties of red silver, two years ago the Cult of Setesh attempted to capture and ransom the king of Brixton in an attempt to gain some measure of control over the island. Their attempt was thwarted by individuals serving in the Clan System, mainly The Unusuals.
